Let’s all agree with the fact that illusion is a misleading perception of reality. When people surround themselves with a “comfy” blanket of illusion they trick themselves into presuming something that might not even exist. At first sight, illusions might not be seen as something dangerous and noteworthy. And then if we look closer we might figure out that some illusions are in fact really dangerous when they people cease to grow, stop pursuing their dreams or they simply jump into conclusions and might act irrationally and crazy… Illusions are tricky. But there comes a time when we should face them and take their masks off.
7 Illusions That Will Get You Nowhere
1. I Will Do It Later… Now I Don’t Really Have Time For This
Raise a hand if this is familiar to you? This is “my favourite” illusion and we’ve been close friends for 25 years now and still counting (a lot less often though).
The truth is, there is no such thing as “I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS”! Think about it. There is always time and you are the only one in charge how to manage it accordingly. If something is truly important to you, there will always be time for that naturally.
2. I Can Do It Faster!
Hmm, let me think about an example. Ok, I’ve got one. When we read the book and we are impatient to find out the ending of it, there is no sense in skipping ahead the chapters in between. I did that all the time back in the days without any solid understanding that I was robbing myself of the whole enriching experience of reading.
Or think about this. If you would ever embark on a journey of reaching the top of Kilimanjaro, it would have never made sense to run there with the speed of sound without putting your gear or boots on first… only because of impatience.
It’s ok to strive for the best and try to make things work fast. But there’s no need to skip ahead unprepared or if doing so means you lose something else in the process.
3. I’m In Total Control
The truth here is simple. There absolutely nothing under our control apart from our mind. Life is well known for its ability to change fast and bring us unexpected surprises and plot twists. What we can do, though, is to train ourselves to deal with any situation appropriately and never be afraid of problems, change, and tricky situations. We can control our mind and make sure that it is prepared to deal with anything with enthusiasm and “can do” attitude.
4. I Will Be Happy If Only………..
Here is another well-known illusion with its soul-draining experience of waiting for the perfect moment to let yourself be HAPPY. Many of us presume that tomorrow will come and something good will happen to sweep all our problems away, bringing us peace, joy, and happiness. In fact, happiness comes without any conditions and can only be experienced in a matter of NOW. Let’s try to change the perception of the reality that exists right this moment and maybe we will realise that in order to enjoy our life and be happy it’s not necessary to wait for something anymore…
5. I Can Change Them
There is no need to feed this illusion that you can ever change someone. The only thing you are in charge of is changing the way you perceive that person. The only thing you can do is to inspire. But the decision to change (or not) will always come from that person.
6. I Will Finish It When Hell Will Be Covered With Ice…
If you have something important to do, do it and finish it now. Don’t delay it till… you know, never! The bundle of tasks we need to perform grows daily like a snowball rolling and gathering more things, growing bigger and bigger… Delaying things you need to do will never resolve them. It’s a given.
7. I Will Start Running When I Will Have More Energy For That
This is a classic one I hear coming from my friend all the time. Somehow she thinks that the presence of the membership card in the gym will automatically make her fit and healthy. The truth is, if you don’t really want to do something or don’t feel committed enough, why feed yourself with lies and false promises? Face it and take appropriate action.
Whatever the illusions we have in our lives, I hope that the vision and perception of our everyday life can become somewhat clearer if we stop feeding our illusions and face them head on…
