As more and more of our lives migrate online, many people find themselves spending hours and hours a day looking at screens. This much time online isn’t great for our eyes for starters, as well as our overall wellbeing. So, if you are looking for a break from your laptop or phone, you should consider giving one of these screen-free hobbies a try!

1. Screen-Free Hobbies: Home Cooking

Cooking is a wonderful hobby that comes with some pretty delicious rewards! If you’re not sure where to start, grab some cookbooks! If you don’t have any, try the local library or borrow from friends and family.

Find out how to cook a Boston butt in the oven, make a tasty risotto, or a mouth-watering brownie. Once you become more confident, you can experiment and create your own recipes!

2. Screen-Free Hobbies: Art

You don’t need to be a Van Gogh or a Da Vinci to get a lot out of drawing or painting! Many of us don’t spend much time in our lives being creative, so engaging in this hobby can help us to release our inhibitions and express ourselves.

No fancy materials are needed, either. A sketching pencil and a sheet of paper are plenty to get you started. Just because you never considered yourself an “artist” doesn’t mean that you can’t have some fun!

3. Screen-Free Hobbies: Reading Great Quality Books

Reading is an easy way to transport yourself to far off lands without ever leaving your couch. Reading can also expose you to new ideas and help you see the world in a different way.

If you want to become a more educated, well-rounded person, reading is a wonderful place to start.

Writing is another fantastic way to express yourself. There are so many different avenues you can take when it comes to writing.

If writing long essays is not really your thing, then you could always experiment with poetry. Or, journaling your thoughts has many creative and self-care benefits.

Taking time to explore nature can brighten anyone’s day, and hiking is a great way to do so. When you hike, you are getting a solid workout in sometimes without even realizing it.

State parks are a great place to get started because they often have marked trails that will specify how difficult they are so that you can plan accordingly.

6. Screen-Free Hobbies: Scrapbooking

Do you have a massive box of photos shoved in your closet that no one ever looks at? Why not arrange those photographs and other mementos you have in a book that is easier for you to peruse and reminisce?

Placing memories in a scrapbook will help make them more accessible and make it easier to reflect and feel thankful for the good times you have experienced.

Invest in yourself. Meditate. Read. Eat healthy food. Drink water. Move your body. Spend time in nature. Rest up. You are worthy

7. Gardening

Have you always wondered if you have a green thumb? Give yourself a chance to find out! Even if you don’t have a lot of space, you could plant a little herb garden in a planter or tend to some houseplants.

Gardening is another great way to get more in tune with nature. You will also get a great deal of satisfaction when your plant finally flowers or produces fruit!


Not every hobby is right for everyone. Try to take a moment to evaluate your interests to find something that will genuinely make you happy and that you will stick with it. If you try something for a week or two and it just is not working for you, it is totally okay to try something else!

The most important thing is to step away from technology for a set period every day – for the sake of your eyes and your brain!
